West and Central Mainland Tour Highlights

Visit a tyrant’s castle

Scalloway Castle

Starting in Lerwick, this tour takes you to Scalloway, the old capital of Shetland. We will stop on the way to take in the splendid views of the village from above, with the islands of Trondra and Burra beyond. Get photos of Scalloway Castle, built by the tyrannical Earl Patrick Stewart and a great example of a sophisticated 16th century tower house.

Unfortunately, the castle is currently closed for extensive repairs. This work is not expected to be completed until 2027.

Learn about the daring deeds of the Shetland Bus

Scalloway Museum, Shetland

Next door to the castle is Scalloway Museum, where you’ll learn all about the heroic wartime exploits of the Shetland Bus and view other interesting artefacts from Shetland’s past. There will also be plenty of photo opportunities as we drive through the historic streets and waterfront of Scalloway.

Pet a Shetland Pony

Shetland ponies

Leaving Scalloway, you have the chance to get up close and personal with Shetland’s furry, four-legged ponies at the Ramnaberg Stud. Here, you will meet owner Carol, a third generation Shetland pony breeder, or one of her team, who will tell you all about this hardy breed.

Explore Viking history and historic woodland

Tingwall valley, Shetland

We then delve into Shetland’s Viking past with a drive through the Tingwall Valley – home to Shetland’s first parliament and where the Norse leaders would gather to discuss their business. From there, we drive to Kergord – Shetland’s only tree plantation.

Wow at one of Shetland’s best views

As we head back towards Lerwick, we make a final stop at one of Shetland’s most spectacular viewpoints at Wormadale. This stunning panoramic view looks westwards over South Whiteness and Whiteness Voe, and to the islands of Hildasay, Papa and Oxna. If the weather is on our side, we might also see Foula – Shetland’s most westerly island.

Our tours will begin in Lerwick at 9am unless otherwise agreed. We will collect you from your accommodation or meet you at the Diana Fountain on Victoria Pier. If you are staying out with Lerwick, please let us know and we can make alternative arrangements for collecting you for the tour.

From our customers

While we were staying in Lerwick with our vessel, Jolene and her staff took care of all shore excursions and the complete organisation to my complete satisfaction. From the planning phase long before our arrival until the support during our actual stay, everything was perfect! It was a great pleasure working with Island Vista.

Magrit Distler

MV “Nordstjernen”

We had an absolutely brilliant day out with Island Vista yesterday! We did the 6h mystery tour of shetland, stopping for coffee and cake along the way. Jolene is a brilliant guide, really knowledgeable and fun :-) . Great day out even for locals, we learned so much about Shetland's history. Thanks for a great day Jolene and Paula!
